Is there something wrong with Ginette Cox? It’s what everyone seems to think. When a doctor suggests that what she might need is less excitement, she packs up and moves from New York City to a house in suburban NY: 19 Howard Ave.
The town offers Ginette little in the way of entertainment in 1959, but at least she has interesting neighbors. Whether it’s the little girl with her doll or the couple and their mother-in-law, Ginette watches them from her window and makes up names and stories for them.
But it’s not all peaceful in suburbia. Ginette finds it hard to sleep in her new house. There are strange and scary noises coming from the basement, and she is trapped, either by a ghost or her own madness.
But when Ginette starts to think a murder has taken place and a mysterious man starts making terrifying appearances outside her window, it’s clear she must deal with whatever isn’t allowing her to escape this house…

Brittany Pressley's narration is captivating as she portrays Ginette, a former actress who is trying to find rest in suburban New York in 1959, per her doctor's orders. But strange noises and an unsettling feeling of being watched make it difficult for Ginette to sleep in her new home. She becomes infatuated with watching her neighbors and creating stories for them. Her suspicion of a murder in the neighborhood calls for action, but she soon finds that she can't leave the house. Is her mental paralysis caused by her own madness, or is it something supernaturally sinister? Pressley nails the lingo of the dialogue, which is fitting for the time period. Her voice also whispers with panic and rage to chilling effect. A.L.C. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine -

No one tells a ghost story like St. James (The Book of Cold Cases), and her latest is another successful outing for the author. Set in 1959 in upstate New York, the plot follows the experiences of (potentially) unreliable narrator Ginette Cox. Ginette is an actress recovering from a drug- and alcohol-fueled nervous breakdown in a rental at 19 Howard Avenue, where none of the tenants seem to stay for long. The shaky Ginette finds herself unable to leave the house: a case of agoraphobia, as the hunky police detective who seems to have more than a professional interest in Ginette posits, or is a more sinister force occupying the house with its human tenant? Ginette's only outlet is gazing out her window at her neighbors and imagining what their lives are like. But are all the neighbors actually living? Narrator Brittany Pressley does a masterful job with her narration, making each character distinct and easy to recognize, especially the acerbic yet vulnerable Ginette. VERDICT St. James has said in interviews that her career began when she couldn't find the sort of books she wanted to read and realized that she would have to write them herself. Now, she's writing books that we all want to read.--Gail Eubanks
